Metermaids BHHF '09 Recap.
Word up.
So I got to the park a little after 8 AM, which was when bands were supposed to load in. Honestly, I was still tipsy from the night before. Like, stumbly-walk tipsy. I copped a Gatorade from a Bodega on my way there, which is a little gross to drink that early in the morning. My first cigarette of the day made my head close in on itself, and I thought the Brooklyn Bridge was expanding and contracting with my breath.
Miller and the band were already there. Sentence showed up right after me. They were still setting up the stage, so we kicked it at the picnic tables in the park bullshitting and smoking cigarettes. It wasn't raining yet. I got in trouble with a park guard for sitting on the table. My bad, yo. A mother and her little daughter came through and started setting up a kid's birthday party. She apparently did not know until that day that the festival was going down. She set up an ill spread of hummus, olives, and nice looking cheeses -- all stuff that I don't think one year olds really get down with. She was more worried about the rain than the rapping.
The whole time we sat at the picnic table this little boy chased a pigeon around the grass, screaming at it. It was an intense battle.
We got to sound check around eleven I believe. We checked with:

And Planes Down
After we sound-checked we left to get some grub, and Sentence, Gray, Andrew and I rolled to Andrew's studio on Jay street to eat and tried to get some quick sleep in. Sleep was a no-go though, and we all lay with our jackets as pillows on the carpet talking about playing organ during church services. We headed back to the spot at like 1:30, hustling through the rain and the cobble stoned streets of DUMBO.
Despite the rain, mad people were already in the spot when we got there. I honestly don't remember much of the first acts that went on, because I was getting more and more nervous (like I always do before shows) and was walking around chain smoking cigarettes. I know that Homeboy Sandman was doing an excellent job at hosting the event. He kept it funny and loose and spit some great acapellas between sets. The crowd was in a great mood, and was very receptive to each act.
We changed our set list right before we went on, switching The Inside to the opening number. It just felt right to do at the time.
When we got on stage, the size of the tent and the amount of people in it was exciting and overwhelming at the same time. We hadn't played a show that big since our shows with D Block last summer. No one put their hands up during the first part of The Inside. Like, literally no one. It was crazy. But in the middle part mad people put their hands up. The Inside is a great barometer song for us. If we can't get hands up for the middle part, we know it's going to be a long set.

We had wanted to do Planes Down to close, but we ran short on time. It was frustrating, but you gotta respect Brooklyn Bodega for running such a tight ship. Shit is not easy to do.
Our set went off though. We were so, so different from every other act on that bill, but heads were still open to us. It was seriously inspiring. So props to everyone who came out and showed love.
Right after our set was a whirlwind of Sentence and I babbling our way through interviews and having sweaty photo's taken. We are so bad at these interviews. It's ridiculous. And seriously -- please don't ever ask us to do a drop for your radio show, DVD, whatever. We will be so awkward that you can never ever use it. Save your tape.
We were mad happy though.
As far as the headlining acts go, pretty much everyone killed it.
Smif and Wesson fucking killed shit. Like, destroyed it. Their set was incredible front to back. Brand Nubian were amazing, and Black Thought came out of nowhere and killed it.
When Premier came on I thought that the tent was going to explode.
Styles P tore it the fuck down too. Dude is like my hero at this point. He had Tech DJing for him which was dope. We've rocked a bunch of sets with Tech before. Tech is the fucking man.

BHHF '09 was amazing. Huge, wonderful crowd, amazing sets from everybody, and an amazing time.

We Got a Show With Styles P in August!
SP the Ghost, yo.
Mad exciting. We will be at Southpaw on August 6th. Hopefully this show will go better for us than when we opened for Fabolous at Blender. Haha.
We did play a bunch of shows with D Block this time last year and they went pretty well.
Anyway, Styles fucking rules and we are excited to rock a show with him regardless. He is also playing the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival this Saturday.

We've Been on Fox Mad Times, Yo.
So they replayed our performance on Fearless Music on Fox on Saturday night. And in typical "Rap's Bad News Bears" fashion, this time we were on the TV with all major, major acts. The Ravonettes (sp?), Color of Fred, etc., etc.
I feel embarrassed even asking people to vote for us to appear again next week. Because there's like no possible way we could win. If you do wanna kick us a vote, you can go to www.fearlessmusic.com and the little poll thing is in the bottom right corner.

I had stayed home on Saturday night, and was in the middle of drinking a whole bunch of whiskey when I remembered that we were on TV. Seriously, I was mad nervous again when the show started. I don't know why -- but I was all sweaty palmed and chain smoking.
Also, the first time the show aired they didn't show any of the brilliant interviewing that we did. This time, though, they did -- mostly me talking, naturally. I talk a whole lot. That's why this blog is good for me. I don't have to burden everyone around me with my never-ending brilliance.

Metermaids on Fearless Music Tonight!
What uuuuuuuuuup.
Sorry about the three day lapse in posting. I obviously try to update this every day. The end of the week was crazy though.
Anyway, we will be appearing on Fearless Music on FOX again tonight at 12:30. They are re-showing the performance that we did last summer -- I think they are even playing the same performance of "Breakdown" that they showed when our episode first aired.
Either way, we are very excited to be on the show again. I love Fearless Music.

Cover Art For "Smash Smash Bang."
So, we went outside the family for the cover art, and it ended up being the right move.
We hooked up with an artist named Lauren Denitzio, who runs a website called Black and Red Eye. You can check out her amazing, amazing stuff here:

She came back to us with a whole bunch of fantastic sketches, and we eventually decided to go with the picture of a bird. Sentence has been our visual-medium-guru mostly, and he has come up with some great animal stuff (remember our bear shirts? We are actually bringing those back soon!), so having an animal on the cover was a no brainer for us.
So here is what the cover art for "Smash Smash Bang" will look like:

What We Are Going For With the New EP.
The first of the summer EP's we are releasing, in June, entitled "Smash Smash Bang" is pretty much done.
We have the insanely dope artwork, which I will share here soon. We also just got the contribution from our special guest on Sunday night, and it is amazing. Sorry to be speaking in hyperbole here. I just could not be more excited about getting this new music out to the world.
It is much, much different from NIGHTLIFE, which I'm sure, if you have been following the blog and watching the live performances of the new stuff, you can tell.
It is a brand new sound for us. And I wanted to share some of the influences, sonically, that we have been courting. YouTube rules for shit like this. Here are some songs that I feel capture the vibe of what we are going for:

Arlene's 6/4 Recap.
So, it was late on a Thursday night, and we were all convinced that it was going to be a sparse, low energy show.
We were sooooooooo wrong.
The spot was packed out, and the crowd was ready to get crunk. Throw on top of that a sound man who was killing it with the light show, and you get the most fun show we've had of 2009 so far.
Here is me and Sentence goofing off with Miller on stage right before we rocked:

Fearless Music Party and Stuff.
Tonight I went to the Fearless Music Launch party at Crash Mansion with my friend Arielle. Apparently they will be shooting all their future shows there. I don't know if that means it will be more of a show atmosphere, with fans able to watch the performance, or if Crash Mansion will just act as a bigger studio? Either way, the set-up was cool.

And the rumor from Fearless is that they might be rebroadcasting our little performance next Saturday night. Once again, I don't know if they will be showing "Breakdown" or one of the other songs that we did that day in the studio. There was an open bar tonight, which was very tempting to go wild on. But I held back, because it is a Tuesday night after all. We watched two bands play -- one was a very good band who had a woman singing and playing guitar. She could sing her ass off, and was wearing one of those fifties-style skirts with red heels, which was attractive.
The other band was called The Dig, I think? They were really tight, but I just wasn't feeling them. They sounded kinda Strokes-ish to me. It's weird. They are obviously a very good band, and the songs were well arranged, and they sang well, and everything else. It wasn't for me though.
I'm rambling. It was a fun night. Show this Thursday at Arlene's Grocery. We might as well have cots in the back of that place at this point. I see the bartenders and sound men there more than I see my Nana. It's going to be a fun show though. We have new songs.

First EP Almost Finished, and Guido Videos.
So, Sentence and I went to the studio today and finished another song for the first free EP of the summer, which we are titling "Smash Smash Bang."
That means the tracking for the EP is done, with the exception of one song, for which we are waiting on a verse from a very special guest, which we are very excited about.
There will be five songs on all of these EP's. On "Smash Smash Bang" there is the quietest song we have ever done with the four loudest, sloppiest, wildest songs we have ever done. I could not be more excited to get this out to the world and see what everyone thinks.
